Natural Skincare and Pregnancy

Organic and natural skincare products offer an alternative to anybody who suffers from sensitive skin, or has certain allergies. A growing number of people have embraced organic and natural skincare products as part of their daily pampering routine, but even those people should be aware that during a pregnancy the body is both under stress and far more fragile that it normally is. Understanding which skin care products to avoid, and which to build into a daily routine up to - and after - a due date, is extremely important. Pregnancy takes its toll on a woman’s body, and understanding how to keep our bodies feeling and looking good during this time is vital. During a pregnancy the skin can go through many adjustments, and products which contain ingredients known to irritate sensitive skin and cause skin allergies might trouble a body which was invulnerable to them prior to the pregnancy. Petroleum based products, that is those that contain petrolatum, propylene, glycol, paraffin alcohol and mineral oil, can do just that. Organic and natural skincare products should not contain these ingredients, though it might still be best to check the ingredients list to make sure non of these little nasties have found their way into a product misleadingly describing itself as ‘Organic’ rather than ‘100% Organic.’ Other ingredients, such as retinol - a form of vitamin A found in our diet and important for eyesight and bone growth - are to be avoided during pregnancy because they may interfere with healthy development or with breastfeeding. Retinol, including adapalene, tazarotene and retinyl, are known to lead to problems with embryo development if used in large doses, for example. Other ingredients, especially fragrances and parfum, have been found in breast milk, so many people might want to avoid them during and immediately after pregnancy. The scalp can become more sensitive than it normally is during pregnancy, and so sodium laureth sulphates (commonly known as SLF’s) and polyethylene glycols (PEG), which can both cause skin and eye irritation, should be avoided if you suffer from a sensitive scalp already or if you find that it becomes so during pregnancy. Other ingredients may be well known to those of us who have already switched away from products containing lots of chemicals toward organic and natural skincare products. Diethanolamine (DEA) and monoethanolamine (MEA) are both linked to cancer and have been proved to irritate the skin.
