Natural Skincare and Pregnancy

Organic and natural skincare products offer an alternative to anybody who suffers from sensitive skin, or has certain allergies. A growing number of people have embraced organic and natural skincare products as part of their daily pampering routine, but even those people should be aware that during a pregnancy the body is both under stress and far more fragile that it normally is. Understanding which skin care products to avoid, and which to build into a daily routine up to - and after - a due date, is extremely important. Pregnancy takes its toll on a woman’s body, and understanding how to keep our bodies feeling and looking good during this time is vital. During a pregnancy the skin can go through many adjustments, and products which contain ingredients known to irritate sensitive skin and cause skin allergies might trouble a body which was invulnerable to them prior to the pregnancy. Petroleum based products, that is those that contain petrolatum, propylene, glycol, paraffin alcohol and mineral oil, can do just that. Organic and natural skincare products should not contain these ingredients, though it might still be best to check the ingredients list to make sure non of these little nasties have found their way into a product misleadingly describing itself as ‘Organic’ rather than ‘100% Organic.’ Other ingredients, such as retinol - a form of vitamin A found in our diet and important for eyesight and bone growth - are to be avoided during pregnancy because they may interfere with healthy development or with breastfeeding. Retinol, including adapalene, tazarotene and retinyl, are known to lead to problems with embryo development if used in large doses, for example. Other ingredients, especially fragrances and parfum, have been found in breast milk, so many people might want to avoid them during and immediately after pregnancy. The scalp can become more sensitive than it normally is during pregnancy, and so sodium laureth sulphates (commonly known as SLF’s) and polyethylene glycols (PEG), which can both cause skin and eye irritation, should be avoided if you suffer from a sensitive scalp already or if you find that it becomes so during pregnancy. Other ingredients may be well known to those of us who have already switched away from products containing lots of chemicals toward organic and natural skincare products. Diethanolamine (DEA) and monoethanolamine (MEA) are both linked to cancer and have been proved to irritate the skin.

Better Ski Technique - Back To Ski School

Posted August 16th, 2008
Categories: Medical Hall

This is the first of five articles taking you back to where you started from. They involve the five basic skiing turns, namely the snowplough (also known as the stem or wedge), the stem turn, the stem christie and the christie (or parallel turn).

Whereever you happen to be in the turning heirachy, they are a very helpful way of learning what you are actually doing on the skis.

Do you remember what it was like the first time you put skis on? Can you remember the first few days of bruises, excitement, and the thrill of uncontrolled speed? I have tried to remember how our ski instructor got us going but without much luck. I remember his name, and how much he drank at lunchtime, and that he had a very red face in the afternoons, but not much else. If you started a long time ago you probably won’t remember a great deal either, so prepare for reversion therapy!

If you started only a short time ago then all this will be instantly familiar, but still very useful. It is intended as revision so that you can revert to practising it, and thinking about how it works. This will be quite easy as you should have no longer have any restrictive influences such as fear, or badly fitting boots (like you did when you started).

These articles are not for a beginner to use as a ski instruction manual prior to skiing for the first time, as nothing can do the early learning process justice except to go out onto the slopes and experience the pleasure, terror, and mere sensation of gliding over snow on a first skiing holiday. I will be mentioning in a future article the very basic guidelines for teaching, so if there is good reason to teach a friend, and it should be a very good reason, then have a look at it when it arrives.

You really must practise these basic techniques yourself; they will not take a long time to get through - perhaps you can run through some of them in an idle moment waiting for your friends at the bottom of the gondola. They will definitely give you an insight into where your weight is over the skis, what you are doing to steer them, and how you are unweighting them before a turn - useful things to store away for later.

With the end of this introduction to reversion therapy, I’ll just mention the build up to the snowplough/wedge position and what it involves:

Putting the skis on. Walking around on the flat to feel the skis. Running straight down on the gentlest slope to a natural stop for perhaps 20 metres. Side stepping with small steps to get back up the hill (going a little higher each time). Running straight down again taking step turns to change direction. These exercises should be done without poles.

The Braking Snowplough (Stem or Wedge) involves getting into the snowplough position with the help of the poles. Alternatively, the ski instructor, running backwards, may hold the tips of the skis to start with. This exercise allows the skier to slide down the slope alternating between braking snowploughs, and straight running, which he does by bringing his heels back together and then pushing them out again. Poles can be held, but the arms should be down by the skier’s side, nice and relaxed. The knees should be slightly bent.

Simon Dewhurst has taught downhill skiing in North America, Scandinavia and the European Alps for 35 years. He currently runs a ski chalet agency in the French Alps. His book “Secrets of Better Skiing” can be found at http://www.ski-jungle.com/better-skiing/contents.htm. If you have any comments about the above article, he will be happy to answer them.

New Mom…New Baby…New Debt?

Posted August 16th, 2008
Categories: Medical Hall

Ah, there is nothing like being an expectant mom. Along with your expanding waistline comes the ever growing list of products for you and your new bundle of joy. Preparing for a new baby can be a costly experience, especially in the areas of clothing and nursery furniture. The good news is that it does not have to be!

Let’s talk about buying baby clothes…think RESALE! Every new mom gushes over the adorable clothing available for babies, but they often come with a not so adorable price. Resale clothing costs a fraction of the retail price. Buying resale clothing does not equal buying trash! Moms sell their baby’s clothing to resale stores for a variety of reasons. Babies outgrow clothes so quickly (normally before they show any wear) they simply cannot use them anymore. Many precious newborns receive more clothes than they can wear in a season (everyone loves to buy baby clothes for shower gifts-they are just too cute!) that cannot be returned and they end up in resale stores with the tags still on! If you have the time and know what you are looking for, you can find plenty of designer and brand name clothing for a steal!

Buy now…save later! There is more beauty to the changing of the seasons than just the landscape! As the temperatures change, so do the prices of baby clothing! Most stores slash the price of their clothing up to 75% by the end of the season to make room for new clothes. Take advantage of this by buying a size or two larger than your baby’s current size for him/her to wear the next year. The savings are amazing!

Another large expense when you are preparing for a new baby is furniture for the nursery. A good place to start when considering which pieces to buy is determining how much room you have to work with? Do you have a large room or do you need multipurpose furniture? A crib is a necessity and a given; however, you can pick and choose other nursery pieces. Combination pieces such as dresser/changing table combos are available at some stores and can save you from buying two pieces. Cribs with attached drawer space that convert to toddler beds are also available and will save you a lot of space. Thinking ahead when buying nursery furniture will save you both time and money in the future. By buying a combination piece of furniture for your nursery, you eliminate having to sell furniture you no longer need, as well as spending time looking for and more money on new “big kid” furniture.

Now that you have decided what to buy, it is time to shop! Once again, think resale! There are many children’s resale stores that carry pre-owned nursery furniture for 50% or more off retail. They usually have several styles to choose from in different price ranges. If you find something you like, they will usually hold it for you (if you were not really prepared to take it home) and some stores may even have lay away plans.

Another great place to buy pre-owned furniture is the classified ads in your local newspaper. Seller’s usually place ads on Thursday or Friday so they can catch the weekend readers. If you find something you are interested in, call quickly! Good furniture does not last long! Make sure you ask the seller plenty of questions. It is important to know before heading out to look at furniture things like the manufacture name, the age, if they have pets (if you are buying cushioned items and allergies are an issue for your family) and the exact color (if it is not adequately described in the ad). Asking these questions may be uncomfortable, but they can save you a lot of time and gasoline looking at something you know you will not be interested in. When you do look at pre-owned furniture from the newspaper, take someone with you and know what you are looking at. Are the style and the manufacturer of the furniture worth what the seller is asking for it? Is the furniture reasonably priced for it’s age and condition? With a little knowledge, buying pre-owned nursery furniture can save you BIG money!

Awaiting the arrival of your new baby is an exhilarating time! Add to the excitement by saving money on quality gently worn (and sometimes new) clothing and pre-owned nursery furniture!

Tibetan Singing Bowl in Meditation

Posted August 14th, 2008
Categories: Medical Hall

Tibetan singing bowls originated in the Himalayan regions of Tibet, Northern China, India, Bhutan, and Nepal. Historians are unable to pinpoint exactly when singing bowls came into being, but the technique to build similar instruments existed in Asia as long as 2,500 years ago. Some sources believe that singing bowls were first used in India 3,000 years ago, and in Tibet 1,000 years ago. It is believed that the “Bon” sect of shamans often used singing bowls in their rituals.

Singing bowls were originally comprised of five, seven, or nine different metals including gold, silver, mercury, copper, tin, and iron. Some also believe that meteorite was used in making the original bowls. But most bowls were made using five metals or less.

Today, singing bowls are often made by pouring metal into a cast. These singing bowls are smoother and are generally easier to play. There are also hand-hammered singing bowls on the market. Hand-hammered bowls are more difficult to play, and even though they are often passed off as old or antique, few of them are. Antique bowls are still around, but they are very rare and high-priced.

Playing a singing bowl is very simple, and you will be able to play most bowls in less than five minutes. Simply circle the stick around the outside of the bowl very slowly in a steady rhythm. You might have to circle for a while before you actually hear anything. You will begin to hear a slight hum, and this hum will increase as you continue circling the stick around the bowl.

Singing bowls are often used for meditation, and you can play your bowl while meditating yourself. You can also ask someone else to play the bowl while you are meditating. Singing bowls are often used in yoga classes as well. In a yoga class someone would sit in the class to play the bowl while the students go through the asanas. This is a nice addition to any yoga class, and is more soothing than the recorded music that many yoga classes use.

Singing bowls are wonderful to use in outside environments and for yourself at home. They are becoming more and more popular in the west, along with yoga and Buddhism. When you are not playing your singing bowl, it still serves as a beautiful decoration for your home. In Tibet singing bowls are often used for other purposes, such as offering bowls, as well as for playing.

Home Remedies For Athletes Feet

Posted August 12th, 2008
Categories: Medical Hall

Quite a common skin problem, Athlete’s foot affects mostly men and young people. This skin problem can be found in the area between the toes, soles of feet fingernails and toenails. Athlete’s foot is caused by a fungus called tinea pedis living off the dead skin cells and thriving in moist warm places such as gyms, locker rooms, showers and swimming pools. If you come in contact with wet floors or touch infected socks and shoes, you can contract this disease.

Symptoms are burning sensation between affected areas, itching, redness, scaling and blistering.

Preventing Athlete’s foot -

- To combat athlete’s foot, keep your feet dry all the times. After drying your feet, remove any loose skin to allow penetration of medication to the infected area.
- Use medicated powder or baking soda in your shoes and socks to keep your feet dry. It will soak up some of the perspiration and help neutralize the skin.
- Wear cotton or absorbent socks and wash them in hot water with bleach.
- Give your shoes lots of space to breathe and ample time to dry before wearing them again.
- Wipe the inside of the shoes with white vinegar or spray a disinfectant.
- Use antiperspirants to keep down the sweating.
- Dry your feet thoroughly with towel or hair dryer.

Natural Home remedies for Athlete’s foot -

- Add 40 drops of tea tree oil to a small quantity of water or olive oil and soak your feet in it for 10 minutes. Towel dry your feet and blow dry to ensure no presence of any moisture. If you still find area still moist, put few drops of tea tree oil on the affected area.

- Dab diluted alcohol on affected area and allow it to dry. The alcohol dissolves the water; helps dry the skin and reduce the risk of attracting the fungus.

- Soak your feet in mixture of apple cider vinegar and water for 10 minutes daily until the symptoms disappear. Apple cider vinegar with its antifungal properties will relieve the itching, peeling and kill the fungus. Instead of soaking your feet, you can also coat the fungus with a cotton ball dipped in apple cider vinegar

- Soak the feet in a solution of baking soda and water for about 30 minutes daily.

- Mix six tbsp of dried chaparral to one quart of boiling cheap whiskey or wine. Reduce and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove and steep for 8 hours. Soak your feet in this solution.

- Boil 4 cups of water, add 8-10 broken sticks of cinnamon; reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes; remove and steep for 45 minutes. Use as a foot bath. Cinnamon effectively combats both yeast and fungal infections.

- Put some freshly crushed garlic on the affected area and leave it on for half an hour; wash with water. Do this once a day for a week. Alternatively you can use diluted garlic juice, garlic powder or a clove of raw garlic. Garlic is an excellent antibiotic that can kill the fungus causing athlete’s foot.

- Add one ounce of chopped fresh ginger to one cup of boiled water and simmer for 20 minutes. Let it cool and apply twice a day to your feet.

- Rub raw honey on the infected areas before bedtime. Cover the feet with an old sock and leave it overnight.

- Soak your feet in herbal tea foot bath of goldenseal and thyme once a day.

- Mix approx 80 - 90 drops of Grapefruit seed extract to two ounce of water and apply to the affected areas with a cotton ball two or three times a day.

- Mix 2 tsp of salt to a pint of warm water and soak your feet for 10 - 15 minutes and dry thoroughly. The salt kills the fungus and reduces perspiration.

Gastric Bypass: Post Operative Expectations

Posted August 12th, 2008
Categories: Medical Hall

At a time when obesity is growing at an alarming rate, an increasing number of people are turning to gastric bypass surgery to solve their weight problem. But just how successful is gastric bypass surgery in terms of weight loss and can it really make a dramatic change to your life?

Gastric bypass has been around for more than fifty years now and, while there are of course risks as there are with any surgical procedure, in the vast majority of cases patients are more than satisfied with the results and enjoy a dramatically improved standard of living. But there is a price to pay.

Following a gastric bypass patients will need to adjust to a very different lifestyle and this can be hard unless adequate preparation is made in advance of surgery to ease patients gently into a post-operative regime.

Some changes are of course obvious. The basic principle behind gastric bypass surgery is to drastically reduce the size of the stomach and physically restrict the amount of food that the patient can eat and so patients clearly understand that the days of sitting down to a big meal are over. But other consequences of surgery are less obvious.

Even in small quantities the days of eating foods that are high in sugar or fat are also over. The consequences of eating such foods can be extremely unpleasant as the rapid absorption of these foods in the now shortened digestive tract can lead to very unpleasant feelings of faintness.

Patients also find that the dramatic change in their eating pattern also leaves them very short of water and they must adjust to constantly drinking small amounts of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration.

This fairly dramatic change in lifestyle is all well and good but just what can gastric bypass achieve in terms of weight loss?

There is of course no simple answer to this question as results will vary from person to person. As a guide however we need to start by understanding just how post-operative weight loss is measured.

The starting point is to assess just how much excess weight the patient is carrying. This is done by working out the patient’s ideal weight. Measured in pounds, for a man this will be 106 plus 6 times his height in inches less 60. If that sounds complicated then here’s an example. For a man 5ft 10ins tall his height in inches is 70. Deduct 60 from this and multiply the result of 10 by 6 to give you 60. Finally, add 106 and 60 together and the ideal weight for a man of 5ft 10ins is 166 pounds.

For a woman the principle is the same but this time a women’s ideal weight is 100 plus 5 times her height in inches less 60.

Taking the example of our man above, if before surgery he weighs 366 pounds then his excess weight is 200 pounds. Weight loss is then measured in terms of the percentage of excess weight lost over time. So, if after 6 months he has lost 100 pounds then his weight loss will be 50 percent. In other words, at that point he will have lost 50 percent of his excess weight.

As a general guide the average patient can expect to lose about 50 percent of their excess weight within 6 months of surgery rising to 70 percent one year after surgery and to 80 percent after 2 years. For the majority of patients weight loss will not continue beyond 2 years and indeed some long-term weight gain will appear after 2 years, typically about 10 to 15 percent of the patient’s excess weight.

Again, as a general rule, patients who are excessively overweight will lose a greater percentage of the excess weight (perhaps as much as 90 or 95 percent) while people who are less overweight may lose at little as 60 percent within 2 years of surgery.

It is interesting to note that patients very rarely lose 100 percent of their excess weight and thus do not achieve their ideal weight as a result of surgery. For this reason, it is sometimes said that gastric bypass cannot be said to be a complete success. The overwhelming majority of patients would not however agree with this statement.

While they may not reach their ideal weight and may have to condition themselves to a very different lifestyle following surgery, for most patients the results achieved and the improvement in their quality of life is simply unimaginable.

Stretch Your Marketing Reach

Posted August 6th, 2008
Categories: Medical Hall

One of the most cost effective marketing strategies you can utilize is an online newsletter, also referred to as an E-Zine.

You can provide valuable content to your customers and potential customers with an E-Zine. The beauty of utilizing the Internet to distribute your information is often people will forward your information to others who have similar interest.

The key to success with an E-Zine is consistency in distribution. It won’t be beneficial to have a sporadic schedule. Distribution of your online publication should be done like clockwork. With all the automation tools available you can develop a system that is relatively trouble free.

For many, the greatest challenge will be the development of content. There are a few ways you can handle this. One, take a day to write several articles and put them in a file that you can easily access. That way, the writing is over and done.

Second, have others write articles for you. Many people are anxious to write for online newsletters.

Third, a quick Internet search is bound to produce several places you can access articles that are there for the taking. Usually, the only requirement is that you give full credit to the authors.

Because I love to write so much I prefer to write my own articles. And yet, if ever in a pinch, I know there are many options.

Here are some examples of well done E-Zines. Each has produced excellent results for name recognition, promotion opportunities and back end business. Notice all have a place to leave an email address. I highly recommend this in that this helps you to build a solid database of interested readers.

Information Overload

Posted August 5th, 2008
Categories: Medical Hall

The good news; at last, you have achieved your dream. You’ve escaped the traditional, away from home work force and are now self-employed whether it be part-time or full-time. Now, the bad news; You are now self-employed. It is both good news and bad news. That is, if you are not prepared to deal with the information overload. There you sit, in your spiffy new office - whether it’s in the corner of the sitting room or in a converted bedroom surrounded by your equally spiffy new toys…your computer, desk and some strategically placed shelves. Your new multi-function center will print stuff, fax stuff and copy stuff. (It won’t hang out the washing, but hey, you can’t have everything.)

You’ve even got work coming-in and the immediate worry about making a living has vanished. Hooray! You really *can* work from home! At first, working at home is pure bliss. Then you get a week when everybody and their dog seems to want your services. After putting in a few late nights, you meet all the deadlines and think; phew…I’m glad that’s over! You decide to relax and give yourself a day off. After all, you worked all through the weekend and earned it, right?

Unfortunately, the following week you find yourself off to a bad start trying to make-up for your day off. Before you know it, you find that you are dropping further and further behind. You reflect gloomily that when you were working for someone else, at least at the end of the day you were finished…what didn’t get done didn’t get done!

Well, it’s time to take heart and set a few simple strategies in place that will keep you in control of your time…and your sanity.

=== 1. Do NOT Accept Any New Work This Week. ===

Take a good look at what you have on your plate now, and carefully plan the week ahead. Your aim is to regain control. Tell new clients that you are fully booked, but you can put them on a priority list to be phoned next week. (This will not only allow you to catch up, but make your services appear highly in demand.)

=== 2. Build In Time For Leisure and Rest. ===

Not only for this week, but EVERY week. A half hour walk; a twenty-minute break in the sun with a cup of coffee; a quick swim or a movie outing with friends - all these activities can recharge your batteries. You will find that you can achieve far more when you are rested and alert. (How many times have you sat at the computer staring at the screen, achieving very little, because you’re over-tired?)

=== 3. Tackle Urgent Tasks First. ===

If you’re behind, your first step must be to contact all clients and arrange firm new deadlines. Make sure you base these new deadlines on what you CAN achieve, not what you HOPE you can achieve. If any existing client needs your services or products urgently, bump them up the queue.

=== 4. Prioritize Remaining Tasks. ===

Scrap anything that is not essential, and delegate what you can. Consider involving family, business associates or friends to handle some tasks. (Warning: do not hand over tasks that must be carried out only by you as the principal of the business. Your reputation is important.)

=== 5. Set Achievable Daily Goals. ===

If you finish a task ahead of schedule, begin the next… but adhere to a definite cut-off time each day. What you are doing this week is establishing a system that will continue to work for you.

Getting out of trouble when your business is in overload is just like getting out of debt. Your business rating is similar to your credit rating - nothing can be gained by denying that a problem exists. Nothing can be gained by slipping deeper into the mire. Call a halt; contact the main players; set workable strategies in place and you can quickly regroup.

Before you know it, your home business dream will be on track once more.
